A condition in which an amphibian larva fails to metamorphose but may grow to a large size. They become individuals that maintain characteristics of larvae, like gills, but achieve the colors of adult animals and sometimes achieve sexual maturity. Neotony occurs sporadically in newts. Neotone frog tadpoles are rare and cannot breed.
